Khost , 29 April 2024 - Airtcc, a leading advocate for freedom of speech and press rights, celebrates the long-awaited release of three journalists who were unlawfully detained by the Taliban. Ismail Saadat, Vahidullah Masoom, and Ehsanullah Tasal, reporters for prominent radio stations including "Radio Naz," "Radio Iqra," and "Oles Ghej" Radio, respectively, were arrested on baseless allegations of "broadcasting music" and "calling female listeners."
The journalists, whose detention sparked international outrage, were released today, [Saturday, 9th of Thor], at approximately 2:00 pm local time, following extensive advocacy efforts and pressure from various quarters.
Airtcc condemns the arbitrary detention of these journalists and emphasizes that their imprisonment was illegal from the outset. The organization asserts that the freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that should never be infringed upon.
"This release is a victory for press freedom," stated [spokesperson's name], spokesperson for Airtcc. "However, it's crucial to remember that these journalists should have never been detained in the first place. Their commitment to reporting the truth should be celebrated, not punished."
The journalists were initially summoned by the Department of Prohibition and Prohibition of the Taliban before being unjustly detained. The decision to release them was made during a meeting of local Taliban officials in Khost earlier today.
While the head of the Taliban in Khost has announced the release without conditions, there remains a concerning caveat. The journalists have been warned that failure to adhere to Taliban media guidelines could result in trial proceedings.
The Taliban's actions reflect a concerning pattern of media suppression since their resurgence in Afghanistan. The imposition of stringent restrictions on media activities and repeated arrests of journalists undermine the principles of democracy and freedom of speech.
Airtcc urges the international community to continue monitoring the situation in Afghanistan closely and to stand in solidarity with journalists and media personnel facing persecution
