Kabul 21 September - In a significant development for press freedom and journalistic rights, seven journalists who were detained in various provinces across Afghanistan have been released following consistent advocacy and collective efforts from journalists' support entities and media outlets.
The journalists, hailing from Kandahar, Nangarhar, Kunduz, Kunar, Paktia, and Zabul provinces, were arrested 23 days ago under unclear circumstances. While two of them were promptly released within 48 hours of their arrest, the remaining five were set free two days ago. The latest developments saw the release of Habibullah Sarab from Paktia and Parviz Sargand from Kunar provinces, bringing relief and joy to their families, colleagues, and the journalistic community at large.
These releases follow tireless efforts and continuous advocacy by various entities, including journalists' support groups and media outlets. The commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists remains a top priority, particularly in the current evolving landscape in Afghanistan.
"While we welcome the release of all arrested journalists, we urge the Afghan authorities to diligently follow up on cases related to the work of the media," stated Fahim Stanikzai Communication Coordinator of the Afghanistan Independent Radios and TVs Coordination Center (AIRTCC). "We emphasize the importance of the commission for the investigation of complaints and handling of media violations to ensure that journalists can carry out their duties without fear of reprisal."
The unwavering commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of journalists and preserving the freedom of the press underscores the critical role of media in fostering democracy, transparency, and accountability in Afghanistan.
As the journalists return to their families and newsrooms, the global community stands in solidarity with the Afghan media fraternity and continues to support efforts aimed at upholding journalistic freedoms in the region.
