Afghanistan Communication Ministry Takes Action: Canceled Broadcasting Frequencies of Unpaid Radios and Televisions

1/14/2024

Kabul, 14 January 2024 — In a significant move, the Afghanistan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA) Department has canceled dozens of radios and televisions broadcasting frequencies due to non-payment of their annual fees. This decision marks a crucial juncture for the country's media landscape, as it affects hundreds of private independent radios and television stations that have flourished over the past two decades.

In the past two decades, Afghanistan has witnessed a remarkable development in its media sector, with the proliferation of numerous independent radios and television stations. However, the economic challenges that emerged in August 2021 have cast a shadow over the media industry, impacting its sustainability and leading to a cascade effect on the livelihoods of journalists.

The international community, once a crucial source of support for Afghan media outlets, has withdrawn its financial aid since August 2021. This withdrawal has resulted in a sharp decline in revenue for Afghanistan's media organizations. Consequently, the adverse economic conditions have led to the closure of hundreds of electronic media outlets, and thousands of journalists have lost their jobs.

In response to this crisis, the Afghanistan Independent Radios and Televisions Coordination Center is urgently calling upon international donors to reconsider their support for Afghan media. The media landscape in Afghanistan has played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, fostering democracy, and providing a platform for diverse voices. Without the necessary financial backing, these outlets face an imminent threat to their existence.

"We are at a critical juncture where the survival of independent media in Afghanistan is at stake," says Shakib Sanin, Director for the Afghanistan Independent Radios and Televisions Coordination Center. "We implore international donors to recognize the vital role that media plays in the democratic fabric of our nation and extend their support to ensure its continuity."

Furthermore, the Coordination Center is urging Afghan authorities to acknowledge the economic challenges faced by electronic media and to consider providing support in the form of relief for fees and taxes. This assistance is deemed crucial to safeguard the vibrant media landscape that has been an essential part of Afghanistan's journey towards progress and democracy.

As Afghanistan grapples with economic uncertainty and the continued threat to its media outlets, the plea for international support and local understanding becomes increasingly urgent. The Afghanistan Independent Radios and Televisions Coordination Center remains committed to advocating for the survival of independent media and hopes for a swift resolution to this crisis.
